Chris Brogan, the president of Human Business Works, challenges us to come up “3 Words for 2012” – that is, three words that capture our goals for a year. He believes that resolutions tend to be “too vague or directed toward one goal.” Instead, he inspires us “to find three words that could be used as lighthouse to guide you through stormy seas… Words that will bolster you and give you a direction that goes beyond the goals you might attach as a result of these words.” To learn more about his approach, visit www.chrisbrogan.com.
Inspired by this challenge, My Two Words for 2012 are clarity and serenity.
Clarity means I will strive to understand and communicate things with clarity. I will be more disciplined in sharing new ideas or suggestions. I will lead the IU Alumni Association to become more focused instead of trying to be everything to everybody, continuing to encourage all those I serve to adopt a “few tasks, done very well approach.”
Some daily disciplines for this will be to:
· Solicit the views of others before sharing mine; and
· Count to three before responding to others in conversations and meetings.
Serenity means that I will devote more time to activities that help me strengthen my mind, body, and spirit. I will be more mindful about my wellness and spending time on those people and things that ultimately foster a stronger inner sense of centeredness and calm. I need to be attentive to how of media and technology influences and impacts my sense of centeredness and wellness.
Some daily disciplines for this will be to:
· Get an average of eight hours sleep at night;
· Be attentive to what I put in my body;
· Act with more intentionality and restraint in my use of technology; and
· Do something every day to enhance my personal wellness and sense of centeredness.
These two sprang readily to mind and adding a third just didn’t seem to fit with the spirit and character of these two. Maybe next year…
